Downtown Flagstaff Couple’s Photoshoot |J+D
Your love.
Documented. Cinematic. Authentic.
I got to spend this beautiful Saturday in December with J & D. It also happened to be the same weekend of the NAU Graduation and also the same day that the parade of lights was scheduled to take place so some of the streets were blocked off and it was a lot more busy than usual but we managed just fine and received a lot of cute comments from bystanders.
This day was super fun and it felt like I just crashed a cute winter date. I always aim to make my shoots fun and natural, like you’re just hanging out with an old friend who also happens to have a camera documenting it all.
We met up at Wheeler park and headed into downtown from there. Our first stop was at the Orpheum Theater. The vintage look of the theater was absolutely perfect for my shoot concept. I decided to have them run towards each other and this is the result below.
Motion captured.
Photos you can feel. A moment in time.
At this point, we decided we wanted to stop for some coffee. So we continued our walk downtown and along the way, found some super cute photo spot opportunities. I love when shoots just naturally come together like this. As an over thinker Type A, I always come into shoots with a plan and shot list but I always aim to allow creativity to flow and pivot when needed. I have found that shoots are so much more fun this way and the photos come out fun, raw and real.
Allow creativity to flow
We made it to Val’s Workshop. Which is the cutest coffee/barber shop. Their coffee was so yummy and the staff was incredibly nice. This is where we got some of my favorite photos from the whole day. It was giving coffee shop date. This was the first date my husband and I ever went on and this was so fun to capture!
After this, we decided to head back to the train tracks. Flagstaff is situated on a set of Train tracks and averages around train every 13 minutes or so. This was perfect for my next idea! My recent photography obsession has been capturing motion blur. Ive practiced more with moving subjects and the motion subjects can create. However, Ive become fascinated with background motion blur and I wanted to capture the train rushing past my subjects, while they are focussed on each other, unbothered by what’s happening around them.
I also wanted to take this as an opportunity to direct anyone interested in motion blur photography to this YouTube video made by Rico J. Needham. This was the most useful and high quality produced video I have found on this style of photography!
